What is a vaccine? A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves a person’s immunity to a particular disease. Vaccines are dead or inactivated organisms or purified products derived from them.

How Does a Vaccine Work? A vaccine typically contains a small amount of an agent that resembles a microorganism. The agent stimulates the body’s immune system to recognize the agent as foreign. The body then destroys the agent, and “remembers” it, so the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these microorganisms that it encounters in the future.
